What is CBD Oil?
Cannabis Sativa is a family of marijuana from which both hemp & CBD products are made. Yes, this is the same plant family that we often call 'weed' or 'ganja'. However, it is important to understand this chemically complex plant to know that not everything gets you 'high'.
Cannabis sativa has 100+ cannabinoids in the plant. Cannabinoids are chemical compounds. These attach to our internal body system called endocannabinoid system which is responsible for homeostasis - or physiological balance within the body system in processes like appetite, mood, memory, sleep and immune system.
THC & CBD are the largest cannabinoids in the the plant. THC is the psycho-active compound which gives the high. CBD is the non-psychoactive compound which doesn't get you high. CBD oil is typically extracted from flower, stem and stalks of cannabis plants.
Hemp is a type of plant in the family wherein the THC content is less than 0.3%. This means, this plant isn't going to get you high. Infact, hemp is a very high protein source - it contains all essential amino acids. Due to the legality of cannabis plants, CBD oils are also extracted from hemp plants in many places. However, hemp seed oil is not the same as CBD oil. CBD oil has CBD in high concentration - which is why it has the healing effects that hemp oil does not.
How exactly does CBD 'heal'?
CBD oil has cannabinoids which attaches itself to the human endocannabinoid system. It interacts with neurotransmitters which impact inflammation, mood regulations, stress response in the body.
Hence, it has found many applications in mental health. It is widely used for anxiety, epilepsy, PTSD, addiction. It is also used in pain management. Arthiritis is a common condition where CBD oil is known to help.
CBD has found huge applications in cancer treatment as well. Most painkillers don't work on cancer pain. CBD oil is known to have brought comfort to many patients.
Is CBD safe?
Yes, CBD is safe. Else, it wouldn't be legally sold in India. It is safe for kids, pets, adults & seniors. However, in India, you need to get an ayurvedic doctor's prescription to buy CBD oils from our shelves. We can set you up with one if you don't have one already.
While research continues on CBD, it is safe to say it has found many applications which heal & treat conditions which we weren't easily treatable earlier. The goodness or efficacy of anything new can be very specific to each person's body. We suggest you consult a doctor before making any drastic decisions about changes in your treatment plans.
